"fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed" during boot

"fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed" during boot

I have this Z9PE-D8 WS motherboard and Ubuntu 12.04 TS (up to date as of
today) and after upgrading to BIOS version 5103 I can't boot anymore. I
arrive to the GRUB menu but neither the latest kernel nor its recovery
mode version will boot. I continuously get the error "fixing recursive
fault but reboot is needed". It keeps running and outputting some bullocks
that look something like:
[...] Call Trace:
[...]
where ... is a bunch of numbers and it keeps on increasing ... I was
hoping it would self-fix and reboot but the numbers go beyond e.g.
447.594247 and keep on going up.
What can I do to fix this? it seems unlikely that reverting to the
previous Motherboard BIOS I will be able to boot.
